  2.                           Boot Disk Instructions

  5. The following instructions have been prepared by Sierra's Technical Support
  6. Department as an added service to our customers.  PLEASE NOTE: SIERRA DO
  7. NOT MAKE ANY CLAIMS, GUARANTEES, AND/OR PROMISES THAT THE FOLLOWING
  8. INSTRUCTIONS WILL WORK ON ANY AND/OR ALL COMPUTER SYSTEMS.

  10. These instructions are only for 386, 486 and Pentium computers using MS DOS
  11. 5.0 and above.
  12.  
  13. IMPORTANT NOTE:  Please read the entire instructions prior to starting at
  14. step 1.

  17. STEP 1
  18.                             FORMATTING THE DISK
  19.   PLEASE NOTE: It is necessary to format the disk even if the disk is
  20.   already formatted.  The /S switch will transfer files to the boot disk
  21.   which are necessary for the disk to work correctly.
  22.                                      
  23.   To make a Boot Disk, format a high density diskette in the A: drive.
  24.   (Use /F:360 or  /F:720 parameter if using a low density diskette)  For
  25.   more information on using the FORMAT command, consult your DOS manual.
  26.   Note: This will not work in the B: drive.  Type the command as follows:
  27.  
  28.   FORMAT  A:/S  <ENTER>
  29.  
  30.   If after entering this command the system responds with a "Bad command or
  31.   file name" error, then type:
  32.  
  33.   PATH=C:\DOS  <ENTER>
  34.  
  35.   Now retype the FORMAT command above.  If you still receive the same
  36.   error, the MS DOS FORMAT command may not be on your system or it may
  37.   have been renamed.  Programs such as PC Tools and Norton Disk Utilities
  38.   can rename the format command to prevent accidental loss of data.

  41. STEP 2
  42.                         LOCATING THE MOUSE DRIVERS
  43.   If you plan to use a mouse with your game, it will be necessary to first
  44.   load the mouse driver.  To do this, locate the mouse driver and copy it
  45.   to the boot disk in your A: drive.  There are two types of mouse drivers
  46.   available, MOUSE.SYS, which must be loaded in the CONFIG.SYS file and
  47.   MOUSE.COM which must be loaded in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  You do not
  48.   need to load both MOUSE.SYS and MOUSE.COM.  Locate the MOUSE.SYS or
  49.   MOUSE.COM file.  Because the file MOUSE.SYS is usually smaller than
  50.   MOUSE.COM we recommend that the MOUSE.SYS file be used in order to free
  51.   more memory.

  53.   a) Locating the mouse drivers:
  54.   If you do not know where the MOUSE.SYS or MOUSE.COM files are located on
  55.   your system, the command below should help in locating your mouse
  56.   drivers.  For users of MS DOS 5.0 or above, type the following at the
  57.   C:\> prompt.
  58.  
  59.   DIR  \MOUSE  /S  <ENTER>
  60.  
  61.   This command only works with MS-DOS 5.0 or above and will cause the
  62.   system to search all sub directories for a file called mouse.  If the
  63.   system locates a file called mouse, it will display the path where the
  64.   mouse files are located.  For instance, if the MOUSE.SYS file is located
  65.   in a C:\MOUSE> directory, the system will display:
  66.  
  67.   Directory of C:\MOUSE
  68.   MOUSE    SYS   55160 03-10-92   3:10a
  69.   MOUSE    COM   56408 03-10-93   6:00a
  70.  
  71.   If the system does not locate a mouse, your driver may have a different
  72.   name or these files may not be currently installed on the system.  Some
  73.   other common names for mouse drivers are IMOUSE, GMOUSE, and HPMOUSE.
  74.   Your mouse drivers may have been included on a floppy disk which came
  75.   packaged along with your mouse.  For information on the proper name for
  76.   your mouse, check the owners manual which came with your mouse.

  78.   b) Copying the mouse driver:
  79.   Once you have located the mouse driver, you will need to copy it to the
  80.   boot disk.  In this step, we will assume that the mouse drivers were
  81.   located in the C:\MOUSE> directory as shown in the step above.  To copy
  82.   the MOUSE.SYS file to the boot disk, type the following at the C:\>
  83.   prompt:

  85.   COPY  C:\MOUSE\MOUSE.*  A:  <ENTER>

  88. STEP 3

  90.                            COPYING MS DOS FILES:
  91.  
  92.   Since access to the compressed drive is not available until the Stacker
  93.   device driver is loaded, we need to copy any files that need to be
  94.   loaded prior to Stacker to the boot disk.
  95.    CD\DOS  <ENTER>.
  96.  
  97.   Copy the following files to the Boot Disk by using the following
  98.   commands:
  99.   COPY  HIMEM.SYS  A:  <ENTER>
  100.   COPY  EMM386.EXE  A:  <ENTER>

  103. STEP 4
  104.                                      
  105.                        CREATING THE CONFIG.SYS FILE
  106.                                      
  107.   Once you are at the C> again, type: A: and then <ENTER> to move to the A:
  108.   drive.  At the A:\> prompt, type COPY CON CONFIG.SYS and then the
  109.   <ENTER> key.  The cursor should appear one line below the line you just
  110.   typed. Now type:
  111.  
  112.   DEVICE=A:\HIMEM.SYS  <ENTER>
  113.  
  114.   Many Dynamix games use EMS memory.  Check your Dynamix game manual to
  115.   see if your game needs EMS memory.  If your game needs EMS memory, use
  116.   the following EMM386.EXE line:
  117.   DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE  RAM  1024  <ENTER>
  118.  
  119.   Sierra games do not require EMS memory.  If your game does not use EMS
  120.   memory, add the following  EMM386.EXE line:
  121.   DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE  NOEMS  <ENTER>
  122.  
  123.   DOS=HIGH,UMB  <ENTER>
  124.   FILES=30  <ENTER>
  125.   BUFFERS=20  <ENTER>
  126.  
  127.   If you are using the MOUSE.SYS file to load your mouse, add the following
  128.   line to the CONFIG.SYS.

  130.   DEVICEHIGH=MOUSE.SYS  <ENTER>
  131.

  133. STEP 4a  STACKER 3.0 AND BELOW
  134.   
  135.   Use this section if you are using a version of Stacker prior to version
  136.   3.1 or are using Stacker 3.1 with MS DOS 5.0.  If you are using Stacker
  137.   3.1 with MS DOS 6.0, proceed to step 4b.
  138.  
  139.   For games needing EMS memory, add the following Stacker device line:
  140.   DEVICEHIGH=C:\STACKER\STACKER.COM  /EMS  C:\STACVOL.DSK  <ENTER>
  141.  
  142.   For games that do not require EMS memory, add the following Stacker
  143.   device line:
  144.   DEVICEHIGH=C:\STACKER\STACKER.COM  C:\STACVOL.DSK  <ENTER>
  145.  
  146.   Continue by adding the following line to the CONFIG.SYS file:
  147.   DEVICE=C:\STACKER\SSWAP.COM  C:\STACVOL.DSK  /SYNC  <ENTER>
  148.  
  149.   PLEASE NOTE:  We used the most common name for the Stacker Compressed
  150.   drive.  This name can in actuality be anything within the normal MS DOS
  151.   file name limits.  Your system may not use STACKVOL.DSK as the compressed
  152.   drive name.  If your compressed drive is not the boot up drive, the name
  153.   may be STACKVOL.000 or STACVOL.001 if you have more than one drive.  You
  154.   can determine the name of your compressed drive by looking in the
  155.   CONFIG.SYS on your hard drive.  If this is the case with your system, it
  156.   will be necessary to replace the STACKVOL.DSK in the lines above with the
  157.   proper name for your drive.  If the name used is different, Stacker will
  158.   inform you it was unable to find the proper file and did not load.  Check
  159.   the name on your hard drive and replace STACVOL.DSK with the proper name.

  161.   Then type the <F6> key and enter.  A ^Z should appear.  Hit the <ENTER>
  162.   key, and the computer should respond "1 file(s) copied".

  165. STEP 4b  STACKER 3.1 INTERGRATED WITH MS DOS 6.0
  166.   
  167.   Use this line only if you are using Stacker 3.1 on a system running MS
  168.   DOS 6.0.
  169.  
  170.   Continue by adding the following lines to the CONFIG.SYS file:
  171.  
  172.   DEVICEHIGH=C:\STACKER\STACHIGH.SYS  <ENTER>
  173.  
  174.   You may be able to free up considerably more conventional memory by
  175.   adding a /EMS switch to the STACKER.INI file.  Please consult your
  176.   Stacker manual or contact Stack Electronics for further information on
  177.   editing the STACKER.INI file.

  179.   Then type the <F6> key and enter.  A ^Z should appear.  Hit the <ENTER>
  180.   key, and the computer should respond "1 file(s) copied".

  183. STEP 5
  184.                       CREATING THE AUTOEXEC.BAT FILE
  185.   Now create an AUTOEXEC.BAT file by typing:
  186.  
  187.   COPY  CON  AUTOEXEC.BAT <ENTER>   (the cursor will drop down one line)
  188.   SET  COMSPEC=C:\COMMAND.COM  <ENTER>
  189.   PROMPT  SIERRA  BOOT  DISK  $_$P$G  <ENTER>
  190.   PATH=C:\;C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS;  <ENTER>

  193.   If you are using the MOUSE.COM file to load the mouse, add the following
  194.   line to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

  196.   LH  MOUSE.COM  <ENTER>
  197.  
  198.   Complete the file by pressing the  F6  Function key <ENTER>

  201. STEP 6
  202.                             REBOOT THE SYSTEM:
  203.   Reboot your system by depressing the <RESET> button on your computer or
  204.   by using the <CTRL>, <ALT>, <DEL> key sequence on your keyboard.  Once
  205.   you receive an A:\>, go to your hard drive and follow the instructions
  206.   to begin the game.
